Region Cup finals: Brisbane and Bern take trophies

The finals of the Region Cups were played on Friday. Two games were decided while another two will have a replay next week.
Brisbane 2-1 Chlef
Brisbane claimed its third ever RC trophy in an exciting win over perennial contenders Chlef. The Australian club had two main star performances to be grateful for — star striker Wik (who manager Per picked up as a free agent after being released from Sydney) and goalkeeper Sala, another free agent win.
In truth, Chlef had the better attacking strategy on the day, but Sala saved an incredible eight shots on target while Wik scored two goals on the break as he registered five shots on target.
Chlef fans will rue the club’s poor finishing in what was an impressive cup final performance.
Bern 2-0 Genoa
They might be an aging and fading force in ES but Bern still have enough to win a cup trophy. The club saw off the challenge of Genoa to win in a comfortable 2-0 game. Genoa will regret its shooting on the day, managing only one shot on target.
Legendary club striker Lock scored the final goal for Bern in what could be his final season at the club.
Liverpool 2-2 Brussels
This was a match up between the dominant force in EN and the likely future of the division. A tired Liverpool may consider themselves fortunate to escape with a draw, courtesy of Brussels’ generous goalkeeping. Their GK conceded two goals in three shots on goals, with Brussels delivering a slightly more upbeat attacking performance of 5 shots on target.
Liverpool looked liked a team challenging on three fronts, tired and under pressure. But this was ultimately another chance to take a trophy in their hunt for the treble.
Brussels will feel confident in the replay, with Liverpool likely playing in the Wes Cup final the following day. Will manager Oz play a weakened line up and sacrifice the RC cup for the more elite Wes Cup trophy? We’ll find out next week.
Brasilia 1-1 Houston
In what has now become the regular matchup for AN titles, Brasilia and Houston once again met in the final. Last season, Brasilia routed Houston in a 4-0 victory but the matches are tighter this season following some squad strengthening by the American side.
It was an even game, with a draw being a fair result. The two clubs are also in a fierce battle for the league title, and both could be decided within a few days next week. Will one club do the double? Or will they share the spoils? Houston may be slightly more pleased to go to a replay considering star striker Mochtar (30 goals this season) was suspended for this game.
