Last night, the legend of Pascual Munoz, the most prolific scorer in the history of WES continued to grow. In a 3-1 victory over Lome, Munoz netted two goals. This brought his career scoring mark to 401 goals as he became the first player in the history of WES to top 400 career goals. To put this achievement in perspective, no other player in the history of WES has even hit the 300 goal mark.
Munoz has achieved this record by being amazingly consistent, placing over 40% of his shots on goal for a remarkable eight of the last nine seasons. While his career sog % hovers at 41%, many believe that Munoz’s success for scoring so many goals can be chalked up to the greatest of intangible assets in WES – quality of shot. Munoz has scored more than 30 goals in a season eight times, more than 40 goals four times and had a magical 58 goals in Season 15.
Additionally, his amazing goal production has not been a product of padding stats in friendlies. In a world where any forward who amasses 20 league goals in a season is thought to have had a career season, Munoz has made this common place. He has scored 20 plus league goals in seven seasons and has three times scored more than 30 goals in league play. In both Seasons 12 and 15 he averaged more than one goal a game, scoring 39 and 38 goals respectively.
While he is now 33 and past an age when many of the greats begin to decline, Munoz shows no signs of stopping. Last season he tallied 45 goals, 28 in league play and put 42% of his shots on target. He is off to another roaring start, connecting on 50% of his shots on goal, through four league games and the first round of WES Cup.
With Chlef off to a great start in both league and WES Cup play, Munoz is hopeful that the twilight of his career can bring a few more trophies to the Algerian side and maybe Munoz will get to 500 career goals and 300 career league goals before his hall of fame career ends.
